In Our Own Words (IOOW) was an innovative, peer-led research training programme funded to empower young people across Surrey. Running over two years, the programme concluded its first cycle in 2025 with findings that have since been implemented to help improve services. The second cycle concluded in 2026, with a new set of findings now being shared and considered for implementation.

The programme gave young people aged 14 to 18 (and up to 25 for those with additional needs or disabilities) the unique opportunity to train as Youth Researchers.

Through professional training in social research methods at the University of Surrey, participants designed and led their own research projects, exploring topics that mattered most to them, with a particular focus on youth mental health and emotional wellbeing.

By gathering insights directly from their peers and professionals, Youth Researchers investigated how to create positive change. They shared vital findings with professionals to help actively shape and improve local mental health services and support for young people across Surrey.
